The combination of LI 11 and Ling Gu (22.05) is an effective prescription for many kinds of knee pain. The points should be needled contralaterally, and to get the best results it is essential to combine these points with movements of the knee joint.
Movements may be active or passive, meaning that you can have the patient do the movements on their own, or you can do assisted (passive) movements with the patient by holding their thigh and moving their tibia in various ways.
When LI 11 and Ling Gu have been needled it is crucial to have the patient move through flexion, extension, and rotations. The video below demonstrates several key movements and manual therapies for a client with knee pain at ST 35 and KI 10.
Learning how acupuncture works through the myofascial system leads to a greater understanding of how to use movements and manual therapies with distal needling.
