The acupuncture points Luo Zhen and SJ 3 are a powerful combination for many patterns of neck pain. These two points alone often produce superior results, but I do like to combine them with SJ 5 for added benefits.

The points should be needled on the opposite side from the pain. Once the needles are in, use the movements in the video below. Using movement with distal needling is an effective technique for painful conditions.

In addition to TW 3, TW 5, and Luo Zhen, more needles can be added to the other limbs. The points used would depend on the patient's overall condition and top health priorities.

Another useful method of pattern identification is to understand how myofascial lines relate to meridians. In the image below, we see the Superficial Back Arm Line (SBAL), which includes much of the area transversed by the SJ and LI meridians.

When Luo Zhen, SJ 3, and SJ 5 are needled as a point combination, it has a powerful effect on the SBAL.

Integrating myofascial anatomy into Chinese medicine and acupuncture has many benefits and can assist in pattern identification and point selection.
