Asian Massage and Bodywork: Acupressure, Thai Massage, and Yoga Therapy

For those interested in Asian massage and bodywork the combination of using acupressure, Thai massage, and yoga is very effective for many conditions.  These three forms also provide a complete spectrum of techniques and energetic balancing methods.

While acupressure and tuina are profound in their understanding of point energetics, Thai massage excels in providing a complete and flowing form for massaging through the entire meridian system.  So while acupressure and tuina tend to emphasize working on key points and local areas of pain, Thai massage provides a more comprehensive massage through the energetic anatomy.  Each of these methods has tremendous value, and knowing when to utilize each of them is a skill to continuously develop.

When yoga is added to a massage, the therapist is in the role of providing assisted stretching.  This is an extremely important therapy that I believe every massage therapist should learn, because providing this benefits the body in diverse ways.  For starters, stretching works on the muscles in a different way than compression techniques that are typically used in most forms of massage.  By stretching the muscles we are providing another way for the muscle to release, and anyone that has done yoga knows how powerful this can be.  By incorporating yoga therapy and assisted stretching into our massage routines we are increasing our therapeutic abilities, while providing more value to our clients.

In Thai massage, yoga and assisted stretching are major component of the form, and when we combine this with its ability to work the meridian systems we find a therapeutic system that is nothing short of profound in its ability to work in a holistic way.
