                      Herbs for PMS

Pre-menstrual syndrome is a disease that affects many women, however it can be greatly alleviated and even eliminated with the use of the appropriate Chinese herbs.  When using herbs for PMS it is important to take the proper herbs as determined by what symptoms are present.   While some women suffer severely from abdominal cramps, some may get more intense mood swings or headaches.  Bloating, fatigue, and breast distension are also common.

In Chinese herbal medicine we recognize 3 major patterns of PMS that cause the suffering that many women experience.  We shall now review each of these patterns so that you can better determine the one that is most appropriate to your condition.

                      PMS with Liver Stagnation
This is the most common pattern of PMS and occurs with the following symptoms:
                      • Lower Abdominal Cramps
                      • Breast Distension
                      • Bloating
                      • Mood Swings
Other symptoms may also occur such as: headaches, digestive conditions, and depression.  The herbal blend I use to treat this is called Free and Easy Wanderer, and gets very good results.  It should be taken daily, except during menstruation.  After the bleeding stops, continue taking the herbs until the beginning of the next cycle.  The herbs should be taken for 2-3 months, after which a re-evaluation should be done.  This formula may be purchased by clicking the following Free and Easy Wanderer.

PMS with Liver Stagnation and Heat

The second pattern of PMS is very similar to the first one except that there are more intense mental and emotional reactions.  In this pattern symptoms such as insomnia, restlessness, anxiety, and anger are also present. There may also be sensations of heat and/or a flushed complexion.  My favorite herbal formula for this pattern may be purchased by clicking the following Free and Easy Wanderer Plus.

                      PMS with Blood Stagnation
The third pattern manifests with symptoms of poor blood circulation
and this causes the blood to congest.  Common PMS symptoms such as cramping, breast distension, and mood swings are usually present, as are some of the following:
                      • Intense Abdominal Pain that is in a Fixed Location
                      • Menstrual Clots
                      • Purple Colored Menstrual Blood
                      • Ovarian Cysts
If the blood stagnation is severe diseases such as dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, infertility, and polycystic ovarian disease may also be present.  One of the best herbal remedies I have found for these conditions is Calm in the Sea of Life. This formula should also be used with either Free and Easy Wanderer or Free and Easy Wanderer Plus.
